Thiruvananthapuram: A sharp debate unfolded within the Thiruvananthapuram district committee of the CPM over perceived lapses in the party’s functioning during the local body elections. The dispute arose during a meeting convened to review party performance, following a report presented by district secretary V Joy, which included remarks against committee member Karamana Hari. Criticism of Joy was also raised by Kadakampally Surendran. The meeting was held in the presence of state secretary M V Govindan and state secretariat member Puthalath Dinesh.

According to party calculations, CPM expects gains even in the municipal corporation and anticipates securing 45 seats.

The clash occurred during a district committee meeting convened to review preparations ahead of the polls. Karamana Hari was criticised by the secretariat for allegedly failing to coordinate activities effectively in the urban wards under his charge. Some members suggested that an additional person could have been assigned responsibility. Following this, V Joy reported the matter to the district committee, noting that lapses in fulfilling party-assigned responsibilities were unacceptable.

At this stage, Karamana Hari intervened, asserting that many current leaders were focused on their personal agendas rather than party work, and that he had contributed hugely to CPM efforts in the capital. Hari’s comments also hinted at leaders acting independently of their designated responsibilities. Even M V Govindan did not intervene during this discussion. Three area secretaries had contested in this local election cycle, prompting questions within the meeting about why individuals holding party-assigned positions had chosen to stand. Concerns were also raised regarding whether there had been sufficient discussion before making such decisions.

Criticism of Kadakampally Surendran also occurred during a secretariat meeting. Kadakampally alleged that some within the party were attempting to politically marginalise him. His frustration was triggered by accusations directed at him related to dissenting candidates.
