Coconut prices rise again after brief dip; oil prices expected to follow

Kottayam: After a brief dip, coconut prices are once again on the rise. In September last year, the price of a kilogram of coconut ranged between ₹45 and ₹48. Last month, prices peaked at ₹90 a kilo before dropping slightly — but they are now climbing again.
During the Onam season, coconut prices hovered around ₹75 to ₹80 for a kilo. Currently, the wholesale rate stands at ₹80, while the retail price has reached ₹85–₹87. This upward trend has brought some relief to coconut farmers, who are now able to sell unhusked coconuts for ₹30–₹35 and husked coconuts for ₹60 per kilo.
According to traders, the rise in coconut prices is likely to push up coconut oil prices by ₹10–₹20. Interestingly, even when coconut prices dipped slightly, the price of coconut oil remained largely unchanged. At present, coconut oil is being sold in the market at ₹390–₹420 per kilo, depending on the brand.
In comparison, coconut oil prices were much lower last year. In September 2024, prices were around ₹260–₹270. The steady rise began when copra started being procured in bulk for North Indian festivals like Navaratri and Diwali.
