Bike riders' close encounter with wild elephant in Chekadi, miraculous escape caught on Video

Pulpally: A few passengers escaped by a hairline after the two-wheeler they were travelling had an unexpected encounter with a wild elephant on the Chekadi forest road. The incident took place near the teak forest (Thekinkoopu) between Thekkady and Polanna at around 8 AM on Monday. Saji and Lakshmanan luckily escaped unhurt despite coming within close proximity of the pachyderm.
The duo were reportedly travelling to purchase hay from Chekadi. Upon seeing the elephant, the driver lost control and the bike fell on the road. The elephant rushed towards them but turned away after the milk van that was following the bike honked. The video footage of the attack was widely circulated on social media. Saji and Lakshmanan who fell from the bike sustained minor injuries. The bike was also reportedly damaged.
The Chekadi road has a dense forest cover and thus wild animals, including elephants, are regularly spotted by motorists. However, due to the foliage, one can spot the animals only after they come quite close, causing accidents. The road, filled with potholes, does not help with easy escape.
