Heavy rains continue in Kerala, holiday declared for schools and colleges in many districts

Thrissur: As heavy rains continue to lash out across the state unabated, collectors of seven districts have announced a holiday for schools and other educational institutions on Tuesday. According to the official announcements, schools and other educational institutions including professional colleges of Kottayam, Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Thrissur will remain closed on Tuesday. Meanwhile, district collectors have informed that, the holiday will not be applicable for residential schools and examinations announced earlier would be conducted as per the schedule. Kannur district collector has announced holidays for schools and colleges in Thalasserry, Taliparamba and Iritty Taluks. According to the official announcements, teachers have to be present in schools and colleges. Examinations announced earlier would be held as per schedule.
Heavy rains have been causing distress and misery across North Kerala as the water level in the rivers have been rising . Many areas of Kozhikode district have been experiencing heavy rain since Monday morning. The Chembukadavu Bridge has been submerged in water since morning. The Tribal families in Chembukadavu area are in danger. Residents of the Kaithappoyil area were trapped in their houses.
Wayanad Mundakai region is also experiencing heavy rain. There has been an increase in the flow of water to the Banasura Sagar Dam. A red alert will be announced if the water level rises by 15 cm. However, as the water level in the river is low, even if the dam shutter is opened, there is no possibility of waterlogging.
Rain has intensified in various areas of Idukki district. The shutters of Mattupetti, Kallarkutty and Pabla dams were opened due to heavy rains. The shutters are still open, although the amount of water discharged has been reduced. In case of rising water level, there is a possibility to release more water. The water level in Idukki Dam has reached 2,360 feet. The water level in Mullaperiyar Dam is 130 feet.
Thiruvananthapuram also experienced heavy rains and strong winds in various areas. Intermittent heavy rain has been experienced since morning.
