Messi ‘took money and cheated’, no one will come to Kerala: Minister V Abdurahiman

Malappuram: Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman has alleged that football icon Lionel Messi and the Argentina national football team failed to honour a contract to visit the state, disappointing thousands of football fans.
Speaking to Mathrubhumi News, the minister claimed that the team did not travel to Kerala as agreed despite receiving payment. He described the incident as a “betrayal” of Kerala’s football-loving community.
According to Abdurahiman, a sponsorship deal worth nearly $16 million had been arranged to bring the Argentina team to the state. He clarified that sponsors provided the funds and not the state government treasury.
The minister said the Kerala government had completed all necessary preparations and signed the agreement. ‘The failure to arrive lies entirely with the team and not with the government,’ he added.
The issue has sparked political debate, particularly in the Tirur constituency, where Abdurahiman is contesting elections. However, he maintained that the controversy has not influenced public opinion.
Abdurahiman had first announced in September 2024 that the Argentina team would visit Kerala. The proposed dates were revised multiple times, leading to confusion and criticism.
He has now stated that neither Messi nor any Argentine players will be visiting the state.
Kerala will go to polls on April 9, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
