Aluva child rape and murder case: Ashfaq Alam found guilty on all charges

Kochi: Ernakulam POCSO court on Saturday pronounced the verdict in the harrowing Aluva child rape and murder case. The accused, Ashfaq Alam was found guilty of all 16 charges. 

Judge K Soman noted that the sentence will be pronounced on November 9. 

As the defendant doesn’t speak Malayalam, there was a translator present. G Mohanraj is the Special Public Prosecutor. 

The prosecution has been demanding maximum punishment for the accused.  While the deceased's parents conveyed that they are expecting capital punishment.

Remarkably, today marks the 99th day since the gruesome event that rocked the conscience of the entire state happened. 

The charge sheet in the case pertaining to the incident that happened on July 28 was issued on the 35th day. The trial began two months later, and the proceedings were completed in 26 days. 

The girl was abducted, brutally raped, and killed by a migrant worker from Bihar who lived in the same building as the victim. Her body was found dumped in a sack in a marshy area behind a local market in Aluva. 16 charges were levied against Ashfaq Alam under various provisions of the POCSO Act and the IPC, including aggravated penetrative sexual assault, rape, and murder.
