Thiruvananthapuram: Industries Minister P Rajeev on Wednesday accused Kerala Assembly opposition leader VD Satheesan and MLA Ramesh Chennithala of creating suspicion around public service undertaking Keltron regarding the AI-assisted traffic surveillance camera project.

The minister extended his support to Keltron, the contract company for the project, and stated that he has asked it to fully cooperate with the Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau investigation. He also denied the allegations that the deal was carried out secretly, and the RTI queries were not responded to properly.

"The tender documents have been published in the public domain, and the government has nothing to hide. The remaining documents will also be available soon on Keltron's website, in light of the controversy they have created. The opposition leader is creating confusion. All matters will come out as part of the investigation," he said.

The minister reiterated Keltron's explanation of the expenses, explaining that the high cost of camera was due to the different types of systems used. The camera is a combination of Keltron-developed parts and parts brought from other companies. He clarified that Keltron had not yet received any payment yet. "It will be paid in installments in 20 years," he said.

"This project includes setting up 13 control rooms and other equipment such as laptops. Keltron pays the salaries of the 146 employees appointed to the control rooms. Earlier, the former opposition leader accused Keltron of leaking electoral data, due to which the Election Commission ended its contract with Keltron. This caused the loss of more than 100 jobs in Keltron. They are now being accommodated in these control centers," he added.

Regarding the cost, the minister explained that the total facility management service, which is for five years, includes internet, KSEB, printing, stationery, and postal charges, which amount to Rs 66 crore for maintenance. He also stated that approximately 25 lakh posts per year to inform violators of the offense are expected.

Rajeev also stated that the contracts for the AI camera project were verified by the transport department's principal secretary.
