A century of life, one habit unchanged: 101-year-old voter still goes alone to polling booth

Gangadharan Achari, a 101-year-old resident of Aruppura Vilayil House in Cherukode, Adoor in the Pathanamthitta district continues to participate actively in elections.
Despite his age, he maintains that both his mind and body remain strong, allowing him to vote without assistance. Over the years, he has lost count of the number of times he has cast his vote, but his enthusiasm remains unchanged.
Early voting experience and democratic awareness
Born in 1925, he first voted in his hometown of Pathanamthitta, Omalloor. At that time, voting rights were limited to those who paid house tax. He recalls that his understanding of elections developed through a radio-based voter education programme, which helped him learn about the democratic process during an era when such awareness was limited.
During his first voting experience, he followed guidance from those accompanying him and selected the symbol they advised. Since then, he has continued voting consistently in successive elections, including the most recent three-tier Panchayat polls.

Independent participation without assistance
Even at his advanced age, Gangadharan Achari continues to go to polling booths independently. Living near the Kutiyil Devi Temple in Cherukode for the past 68 years, he has family members including children, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, yet he prefers to vote on his own without relying on anyone.
He approaches voting thoughtfully, considering prevailing conditions, candidates, and circumstances rather than aligning with any specific political party.
In his youth, he recalls witnessing Mahatma Gandhi during an event at Elanthoor, where a charkha was inaugurated. He also mentions having met prominent historical figures such as Sree Chithira Thirunal, Sir C.P., and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at different points in his life, reflecting the span of history he has personally experienced.
Routine, health, and daily lifestyle
Despite his age, he maintains a disciplined daily routine. He wakes up early at around 4 a.m., walks about half a kilometre, and follows a simple diet that includes porottas with egg curry, milk, water, and a modest portion of rice. Although he has lost his teeth due to age, he remains active and retains a positive outlook.
Gangadharan Achari continues to express excitement about voting, describing it as both thrilling and meaningful. He is preparing to cast his vote in the upcoming election at the polling booth near his residence, maintaining a lifelong tradition of participation in the democratic process.
