Karnataka: The Congress leadership is reportedly weighing the possibility of sending Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president YS Sharmila to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, following her meeting with senior party leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi.

While Sharmila publicly maintained that the discussions centred on strengthening the Congress organisation in Andhra Pradesh, political circles and party insiders believe her visit may also be linked to discussions about a potential Rajya Sabha nomination.

What happened during the meeting?

YS Sharmila met Rahul Gandhi at 10 Janpath, the residence of Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, on Friday.

After the meeting, Sharmila said she had detailed discussions with Rahul Gandhi regarding the future of the Congress in Andhra Pradesh and the steps needed to strengthen the party at the grassroots level.

"We discussed various issues related to strengthening the Congress in Andhra Pradesh and received several suggestions from Rahul Gandhi ji," she said.

According to party sources, the meeting focused on rebuilding the party's organisational structure, expanding its voter base and preparing a long-term strategy for Andhra Pradesh, where the Congress has struggled politically for more than a decade.

Why Rajya Sabha speculation has intensified

Sources within the party claim that the Congress leadership had earlier assured Sharmila of a Rajya Sabha opportunity when she was appointed APCC chief nearly two years ago.

The party entrusted her with the challenging task of reviving the Congress in Andhra Pradesh and reclaiming the political legacy of her father, former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, which is currently associated largely with the YSR Congress Party led by her brother YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Insiders believe the Congress high command has responded positively to her request for a Rajya Sabha berth and may view her elevation to Parliament as a way to strengthen the party's presence in Andhra Pradesh.

The possibility has gained attention because the Congress is expected to secure three Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka in the upcoming elections, creating an opportunity for the leadership to accommodate senior leaders from other states.

Congress' Andhra Pradesh challenge

The meeting comes at a crucial time for the Congress in Andhra Pradesh.

Since the bifurcation of the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the party has witnessed a dramatic decline in electoral fortunes. The Congress has failed to win a single seat in the 175-member Andhra Pradesh Assembly over the past decade.

Meanwhile, the state's political landscape has been dominated by regional parties. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), an ally of the NDA at the Centre, currently governs the state with a strong majority, while the YSR Congress Party remains a major opposition force.

Against this backdrop, the Congress is attempting to rebuild its organisational network and reconnect with voters across the state.

Why Sharmila matters to Congress

Political observers believe Sharmila remains one of the Congress party's most recognisable faces in Andhra Pradesh due to her connection to the YSR political legacy.

Since taking charge as AP Congress president, she has frequently criticised the previous YSRCP government and targeted her brother Jagan Mohan Reddy over issues related to governance and public policy.

The Congress leadership reportedly views her as a leader capable of attracting sections of traditional YSR supporters who once formed an important part of the party's support base.

Who is YS Sharmila?

Y. S. Sharmila is an Indian politician and the daughter of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, popularly known as YSR.

She is the younger sister of Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the president of the YSR Congress Party.

Sharmila first gained statewide prominence through extensive political padayatras and public outreach programmes undertaken in support of her family's political legacy. In 2021, she launched the YSR Telangana Party in Telangana before later merging her political efforts with the Congress.

In January 2024, she formally joined the Indian National Congress and was subsequently appointed president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee. Since then, she has been leading the party's revival efforts in the state.

What happens next?

Neither the Congress leadership nor Sharmila has officially confirmed any discussions regarding a Rajya Sabha nomination. However, the timing of the meeting and the availability of Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka have fuelled intense political speculation.

If nominated, Sharmila would gain a national parliamentary platform while continuing to play a central role in the Congress party's efforts to regain relevance in Andhra Pradesh.
