Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said yoga is not merely a form of physical exercise nor is it restricted to any particular age group, but an expression of the human spirit, as he addressed the nation at the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations from Kolkata's Red Road.

Highlighting yoga's growing global appeal, Modi noted that June 21, which marks the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, has now also become the world's largest community celebration day because of yoga.

"Yoga is not just physical exercise, not restricted to any age group; it is expression of human spirit," Modi said while participating in the nationwide observance themed 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing'.

Emphasising yoga's role in fostering unity and collective well-being, the Prime Minister said, "Yoga brings people together; I congratulate people of the world on this occasion."

Referring to the significance of June 21, Modi added, "June 21 marks longest day on Earth, it has now become largest community celebration day because of yoga."

The 12th edition of the event is being observed across India and around the world under the theme 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing', highlighting the role of yoga in promoting healthy and active living across all stages of life.

This year's theme reflects the growing global focus on healthy ageing and overall well-being, as countries grapple with rising lifestyle-related diseases and ageing populations. The emphasis, experts say, is increasingly shifting from merely extending lifespan to improving health span and quality of life.

Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres extended greetings on the occasion, describing yoga as a universal practice that helps millions find calm, strength and purpose.

"From its deep roots in ancient India, yoga has become truly universal, helping millions of people of all faiths & cultures find calm, build strength & live with purpose," Guterres said in a post on X.

"It teaches us mindfulness, respect & care for ourselves, for our planet & for one another," he added.

Calling for greater care for elderly populations, the UN chief said, "On this Yoga Day, let's extend that care to the older members of our human family & build a world where every generation can lead a healthy life. Namaste!"

The United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014 following a resolution proposed by India and endorsed by a record 175 member states after Prime Minister Modi first raised the idea during his address to the UN General Assembly.
