Will Vijay Shah be removed for crass remark on Col Qureshi? BJP sources break silence

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh's Tribal Welfare Minister, Kunwar Vijay Shah, is under intense scrutiny following his controversial remarks about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a senior Indian Army officer involved in media briefings during Operation Sindoor. The Supreme Court has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident, with a report due by May 28.
Supreme Court's rebuke
The Supreme Court dismissed Shah's apology, describing it as insincere and stating that his comments brought shame to the nation. The court emphasized the need for accountability and directed the formation of a three-member SIT, comprising senior police officers, to investigate the matter thoroughly.
Opposition's outcry
The opposition Congress party has been vocal in demanding Shah's removal from the cabinet. State Congress President Jitu Patwari questioned the BJP's delay in taking action against Shah, accusing the party of protecting its leaders despite serious allegations.
Public protests and political reactions
Public outrage has been widespread, with protests erupting in various parts of the country. In Jind, Haryana, demonstrators burned effigies of Shah, expressing solidarity with Colonel Qureshi and condemning the minister's remarks.
Political leaders across party lines have criticized Shah's comments. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav labeled the remarks as reflective of the BJP's mindset, while the Trinamool Congress questioned the BJP's definition of patriotism, demanding Shah's removal from the cabinet.
Government's stance
Despite the mounting pressure, sources within the ruling BJP have indicated that any decision regarding Shah's political future will be made after the SIT submits its report to the Supreme Court on May 28. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has stated that the government will abide by the court's directives and has refrained from taking immediate action against Shah.
