Why Army's new Baaz Battalion matters after Operation Sindoor: India's first dedicated drone hub

The battlefield is changing, and the Indian Army is responding by putting more eyes in the sky.

The Army has raised its first dedicated drone battalion along the western front with Pakistan, creating a new layer of surveillance and reconnaissance capability as the force reshapes itself after the lessons of recent operations.

Named the Baaz Battalion, the unit has been raised in Jalandhar and will operate under the 11 Corps, or Vajra Corps, which is responsible for some of the most sensitive stretches of the India-Pakistan border in northern Punjab.

The choice of 'Baaz', Hindi for hawk, is telling. The bird is associated with sharp vision, persistent observation and the ability to track targets from a distance, qualities that increasingly define the role of unmanned systems in modern warfare.

However, the significance of the new battalion lies less in its name and more in what it represents: the Army is moving from having drones as individual battlefield assets to building an interconnected drone architecture.

Unlike the smaller drone platoons being embedded within infantry battalions, the Baaz Battalion is designed to operate on a much larger scale.

It will function as a centralised hub, bringing together flight operations, data exploitation, maintenance, software updates and coordination with troops operating on the ground.

The unit will operate larger platforms such as the Searcher and is expected to be capable of flying a wider range of long-endurance unmanned aerial systems, including the American MQ-9B and Israeli Heron and Hermes platforms.

That means the Army is not merely looking for more drones. It is building a system that can turn information gathered by multiple platforms into a usable battlefield picture.

The northern Punjab frontier is particularly significant in this context. The region witnessed major fighting during both the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan, and the new battalion will be tasked with keeping watch over vast stretches of this strategically important border.

Its role, however, will extend beyond simply looking across the frontier.

The combination of long-endurance UAVs and other unmanned systems will allow commanders to maintain persistent surveillance, conduct reconnaissance deeper into hostile territory and track changes in the adversary's deployment.

The objective is to establish a clearer picture of where enemy formations and assets are located and how they are moving during rapidly changing operational situations.

The Baaz Battalion is also only one piece of a much larger transformation underway across the Army.

Infantry battalions are beginning to receive Ashni platoons, equipped with quadcopter-style drones for reconnaissance and offensive operations.

The artillery is set to induct Divyastra batteries into existing regiments while also raising Shaktiban regiments.

These formations will employ longer-range drones capable of detecting targets deep inside hostile territory, alongside loitering munitions of different ranges.

The Armoured Corps is similarly experimenting with Shaurya squadrons, giving armoured formations greater aerial reconnaissance capabilities to support both offensive and defensive operations.

Taken together, these initiatives point towards an Army in which drones are no longer niche equipment attached to selected formations. They are becoming part of the basic architecture of combat.

The challenge, however, is no longer simply getting more drones into the field. It is dealing with the enormous volume of information they generate.

That is where the Baaz Battalion could acquire its real importance.

The Army intends to integrate these increasingly varied platforms under a more standardised command structure while ensuring that the data they produce can be processed quickly enough to influence decisions on the battlefield. AI-based battlefield decision-support systems are expected to play a major role in sorting and prioritising this information.

The thinking has been shaped by recent operational experience, including the prolonged military standoff with China along the Line of Actual Control and the tactical lessons of Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in May last year.

Drones and surveillance systems played a major role in developing a clearer operational picture during these engagements, reinforcing the importance of persistent intelligence and rapid battlefield awareness.

The emerging model is therefore not simply about replacing soldiers' eyes with cameras in the sky. It is about compressing the distance between detection, analysis and decision-making.

The Army has not yet finalised how many Baaz Battalions it ultimately intends to raise. However, officials indicate that the model is expected to be replicated across other field formations over time.

Jalandhar, meanwhile, already has an Army Aviation Squadron operating Cheetah and Chetak helicopters and participating in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations across Punjab.

With the Baaz Battalion now joining that operational ecosystem, the skies over the western front are set to become far more crowded, and far more consequential.
