'People’s power has prevailed': PM Modi hails historic BJP victory as TMC era ends in Bengal

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared a historic victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the West Bengal Assembly elections on Monday evening, characterising the results as a "spectacular mandate" that will fundamentally alter the state's political trajectory.

"The Lotus blooms in West Bengal!" the Prime Minister posted on X. "The 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections will be remembered forever. People's power has prevailed, and BJP's politics of good governance has triumphed. I bow to each and every person of West Bengal."

Modi further pledged that the party would prioritise the "dreams and aspirations" of the populace, promising an administration that "ensures opportunity and dignity to all sections of society."

A Decisive Shift in Power

As of Monday evening, the BJP had officially secured 34 seats and maintained leads in 170 others, comfortably surpassing the 148-seat majority threshold in the 294-member Assembly. In contrast, the incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC) had bagged 13 seats and was leading in 70 constituencies.

The scale of the "saffron surge" suggests a profound structural realignment in West Bengal politics:

• BJP Expansion: The party's vote share surged to approximately 45%, up from 38% in the 2021 election.
• TMC Erosion: The ruling party’s support base fell to roughly 40.94%, a significant drop from the 48% share it commanded five years ago.

Analysts noted that the BJP breached the halfway mark well before the counting process reached its midpoint, signalling a rejection of the 15-year incumbency of the TMC.

Bhabanipur: A Lone Stronghold

Amidst the sweeping statewide gains for the opposition, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee managed to hold her ground in her home constituency of Bhabanipur. After 13 rounds of counting, Banerjee maintained a lead of 5,349 votes over BJP challenger Suvendu Adhikari.

While the Chief Minister’s individual performance remains a focal point, the broader results indicate that the BJP is poised to form its first-ever government in the state, ending over a decade of Trinamool Congress rule. Tabulation continues under rigorous security as final figures for the remaining seats are verified.
