In a major push to streamline voting and reduce crowding ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has approved the creation of 4,660 auxiliary polling stations across the state.

The poll body has also urged voters to check their polling station details in light of the changes.

The decision comes after several polling stations reported having more than 1,200 voters, a number that can lead to long queues and delays on election day.

By setting up auxiliary polling booths, the ECI aims to distribute voters more evenly and ensure a smoother, faster voting experience.

Alongside the addition of new booths, the Commission has approved the shifting of 321 polling stations.

These relocations have been carried out keeping voter convenience in mind, including factors such as accessibility, distance, and local infrastructure.

The reshuffle means that some voters may find their designated polling stations changed compared to previous elections.

Officials have stressed the importance of voters verifying their polling station details well in advance to avoid confusion on polling day.

With the inclusion of the newly created auxiliary polling stations, the total number of polling booths in West Bengal has now risen to 85,379.

The move is part of the Commission’s broader effort to enhance election preparedness in one of the country’s most politically significant states.

West Bengal has historically recorded high voter turnout, often accompanied by heavy footfall at polling centres. The ECI’s latest measures are aimed at easing this pressure while ensuring that voters can cast their ballots without inconvenience.

The Commission has also been taking steps to strengthen logistical arrangements, including better queue management, improved facilities at polling stations, and enhanced accessibility for elderly and differently-abled voters.

As the state gears up for a high-stakes electoral battle, the ECI’s focus remains on ensuring a free, fair, and voter-friendly process.

For voters, however, one key takeaway stands out: check your polling station before stepping out to vote.
