Severe thunderstorms to hit South Bengal: Kalbaishakhi, heavy rain warning

Kolkata: The South Bengal region is preparing for a spell of severe thunderstorms, with meteorologists warning of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and possible hailstorms beginning March 19. According to the Alipur Meteorological Department, conditions are rapidly evolving, with a high likelihood of Kalbaishakhi storms—seasonal nor’westers that often bring sudden, intense weather changes.
The first round of thunderstorms is expected to hit Bankura, Purulia, Paschim Medinipur, and Jhargram on Wednesday evening. By Thursady, the impact will expand to include Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman, and other districts, with wind speeds potentially reaching 50-60 km/h. As the weather system strengthens, heavy rainfall is predicted across most of South Bengal by Friday.
Cyclonic circulation and regional instability
The current weather conditions are being influenced by a cyclonic circulation over Northeast Assam, which is increasing instability in the region. This system is drawing moisture from the Bay of Bengal, further intensifying storm activity. The weather department has indicated that thunderstorms may reach speeds of 30-40 km/h initially, increasing further as Kalbaishakhi conditions develop.
North Bengal is also expected to see a shift in weather patterns. While the storms will not be as severe as in the southern districts, light rainfall is forecasted across all districts from Friday onwards.
Risk to agriculture and infrastructure
The forecasted storms pose a significant threat to agriculture in South Bengal, as heavy rainfall and strong winds could damage standing crops. The Alipur Meteorological Department has specifically warned of potential losses for farmers, urging them to take necessary precautions to protect their produce.
Local authorities are also preparing for possible infrastructure disruptions, particularly due to high winds. The risk of power outages, falling trees, and waterlogging in urban areas remains high. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to secure loose objects, avoid construction sites, and remain indoors during periods of severe weather.
Precautionary measures and safety advisory
Authorities have issued multiple warnings urging residents to stay vigilant. Officials recommend avoiding unnecessary travel, particularly during peak storm hours, and staying informed through official weather updates. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to the likelihood of treacherous conditions caused by strong winds.
Emergency response teams are on standby to manage any disruptions, and public awareness campaigns are being conducted to ensure people take necessary precautions. Schools and public institutions have been advised to monitor the situation closely and make contingency plans if conditions worsen.
Extended forecast and outlook
The turbulent weather is expected to continue through March 22, with thunderstorms likely to affect additional districts such as Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia. While the storms will bring much-needed relief from the prevailing heat, authorities caution that the risks posed by high winds and intense rainfall must not be underestimated.
With severe weather warnings in place, residents of South Bengal are urged to take necessary precautions, stay updated on weather developments, and prioritise safety during this period of heightened weather activity.
