US Ambassador to India arrives for Assam CM’s swearing-in; high-profile ceremony at Khanapara

Guwahati: Ahead of the swearing-in of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government in Guwahati on Tuesday, a series of political and ceremonial developments unfolded, with high-profile arrivals, Cabinet announcements and statements of support marking the day.

High-level arrivals and ceremony details

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Guwahati on Tuesday to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government.

The oath-taking ceremony of the new Assam government is scheduled to take place on May 12 in Guwahati and is expected to witness the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, senior Union ministers, and chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from several NDA-ruled states.

Meanwhile, guests have begun to arrive in Guwahati for the event. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton and Minister Jacob Zhimomi also reached the venue ahead of the ceremony.

Preparations have been completed at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, where the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to be held at 11:40 AM.

Cabinet names, Speaker proposal and X announcements

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the names of four ministers slated for induction into the state Cabinet while also naming the candidate for Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly.

In a post on X, Sarma said that, along with him, Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro, and Ajanta Neog will also be sworn in as ministers on Tuesday in the ceremony.

Additionally, senior BJP leader and MLA Ranjit Das has been named the candidate for the post of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

"Happy to announce that the following four colleagues of mine will take oath as Ministers tomorrow along with me in the august presence of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji -Shri Rameswar Teli, Shri Atul Bora, Shri Charan Boro Smt. Ajanta Neog. I am also happy to share that Shri Ranjit Das, Hon'ble MLA, will be our candidate for the post of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly," said Sarma.

Taking to X, he also reaffirmed his administration's commitment to development, stating that the new team will work with "full dedication" for a "stronger, more developed, and prosperous Assam."

"My heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all of them. Together, we will continue to work with full dedication for a stronger, more developed and prosperous Assam," added Sarma.

Religious visit and political reactions

Assam Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday sought blessings from Maa Kamakhya, hoping for "peace, progress and prosperity" for the people of the state ahead of his swearing-in ceremony.

In a post on X, he said blessings from Maa Kamakhya and Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev would guide Assam’s development path.

"May the blessings of Maa Kamakhya and Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev illuminate the lives of everyone in Assam and open new pathways to peace, progress and prosperity. Assam will scale new heights of development in the coming days with their blessings. 12.05.2026," he wrote.

Meanwhile, Ranjit Das, who has been named candidate for Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, praised the NDA government’s work in the state and expressed confidence in its long-term tenure.

Speaking with ANI, he said, "It is a fortunate day for Assam. CM Himata Biswa Sarma has been chosen to develop Assam further... Almost 20 CMs are here... The BJP will form government in 2031 too... Himanta Biswa Sarma's government will be formed for 15 years," he said.

"The CM has announced my name as a candidate for the speaker post. I am very fortunate," he added.

Nagaland Minister Jacob Zhimomi also welcomed the outcome of the election, saying voters had reposed trust in Sarma’s leadership and development agenda.
