Sonbhadra, UP: Rescue operations intensified on Sunday after a stone quarry collapse in Sonbhadra district, where around 15 labourers are feared trapped under massive rubble.

According to ANI, one body has been recovered, while search and rescue teams continue to work through the debris.

Visuals from the Billi Markundi area in Obra, where the incident occurred, showed personnel from the NDRF and SDRF digging through large stone slabs after a portion of the Krishna Mines quarry caved in on Saturday.

District Magistrate B.N. Singh said the collapse occurred when “a wall inside Krishna Mines quarry suddenly caved in, trapping the workers there.” He confirmed that specialised teams had arrived from Mirzapur to assist with rescue efforts.

Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Social Welfare Sanjeev Kumar Gond, who is also the local MLA, visited the site along with senior district officials. Citing accounts from people present during the incident, he said “around a dozen labourers” may still be trapped.

Gond added that the exact number remains uncertain. “The district magistrate, superintendent of police and other officials are at the spot, and relief operations are underway. I am also present here and every possible effort is being made.”
