TN Thaimaaman scheme explained: Who gets gold ring, documents required and how to collect it
Tamil Nadu’s Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram scheme, under which eligible newborns delivered at government health institutions will receive a one-gram gold ring, has laid down specific eligibility and documentation requirements for beneficiaries.
The scheme covers eligible babies born in government health institutions across Tamil Nadu from June 22, 2026, onwards.
The initiative is aimed at extending the benefit to newborns whose deliveries take place within the state’s government healthcare system.
According to the prescribed guidelines, the benefit is linked to the place of delivery, the mother’s residence and her registration under the state’s pregnancy monitoring system.
Who is eligible?
The scheme covers newborns delivered in eligible government hospitals and health institutions in Tamil Nadu from June 22, 2026, subject to the prescribed conditions.
The key eligibility criteria are:
Government hospital delivery: The newborn must have been delivered in an eligible government hospital or health institution in Tamil Nadu.
Date of delivery: The delivery must have taken place on or after June 22, 2026.
Mother’s residence: The mother must be a resident of Tamil Nadu.
PICME registration: The mother must be registered under the state’s Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME) system.
RCH ID: The mother must have a Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) ID.
Both boys and girls eligible: The benefit is available to newborns of both genders.
Private hospital births excluded: Babies born in private hospitals are not covered, as the scheme is specifically linked to deliveries at government-run health institutions.
No separate application: Eligible beneficiaries do not have to submit a separate application for the gold ring.
Verification by health authorities: The concerned health institution will verify the delivery records, PICME registration, RCH ID and other prescribed eligibility requirements before providing the benefit.
How will beneficiaries receive the ring?
Pregnant women are required to register under the PICME system and obtain their RCH details during pregnancy.
After delivery, the concerned government health authorities will verify the records before the ring is issued.
For babies covered under the scheme following its rollout, the distribution will be facilitated through the respective government hospital or health institution where the delivery takes place.
For the initial distribution, however, district administrations have made arrangements at designated distribution centres to manage the number of beneficiaries and prevent overcrowding.
Beneficiaries will be informed about their allotted date and time through invitations distributed by Village Health Nurses.
They have been instructed to report to the designated centres only at the time specified in their invitation.
District administrations have also made transportation arrangements for beneficiaries from their respective areas to the distribution centres.
What documents are required?
Beneficiaries will need to provide their PICME registration number and RCH ID, along with the relevant hospital records.
The documents required for verification include:
- PICME registration number
- Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) ID
- Hospital discharge or delivery records
- Proof of the mother’s residence in Tamil Nadu
For establishing Tamil Nadu residence, beneficiaries can submit documents such as an Aadhaar card, ration card or voter ID, subject to the prescribed verification requirements.
Other documents accepted as residence proof include a Labour Welfare Board identity card, Proof of Address Card issued by the Department of Posts or a nativity certificate.
Officials will verify the documents and records before the benefit is handed over to the eligible beneficiary.
Why are PICME and RCH details important?
PICME is the state’s system for tracking pregnancies and monitoring maternal and infant health. Registration allows health authorities to maintain records of pregnant women and their deliveries.
The RCH ID is linked to the mother’s health records and is therefore an important part of the verification process for the Thaimaaman gold ring scheme.
Mothers covered by the scheme should therefore ensure that their PICME registration and RCH details are available and that the information corresponds with their hospital records.
What should beneficiaries do?
- Eligible mothers should keep their PICME number, RCH ID, delivery records and residence proof ready for verification.
- Those receiving an invitation for distribution should visit the designated centre only on the allotted date and at the specified time.
- The district-level arrangements, including designated centres and transportation facilities, are intended to make the distribution process more orderly and prevent overcrowding as the scheme is rolled out across Tamil Nadu.
