Mumbai: Tesla officially entered the Indian market on Tuesday with the launch of its Model Y electric SUV. The base variant with rear-wheel drive (RWD) is priced at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), according to the company’s website. The Long Range RWD version of the Model Y is listed at ₹67.89 lakh, offering an extended driving range.

Comparison with international pricing

Internationally, the Model Y is priced at $44,990 in the US, 263,500 yuan in China, and 45,970 euros in Germany. The Indian pricing represents a difference of around $15,000 compared to the vehicle's base price in the US, before any federal tax incentives.

The Model Y will initially be offered in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. Deliveries are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2025.

Claimed driving range and charging time

Tesla claims the standard RWD variant can cover 500 km on a full charge, while the Long Range RWD variant offers a claimed range of 622 km.

With its fast charging capability, the Model Y takes 15 minutes to add a range of up to 238 km for the RWD trim and 267 km for the Long Range RWD trim.

Acceleration and top speed

According to the information available on its website, the Model Y RWD can reach 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the Long Range RWD model takes 5.6 seconds for similar acceleration. The top speed is the same at 201 kmph for both versions.

Interior features and technology

The cabin offers features like a 15.4-inch front touchscreen infotainment system, 8-inch rear touchscreen, powered front seats with ventilation, powered two-way folding and heated second-row, footwell and door pocket ambient lighting, wrap-around ambient lighting and nine speakers.

Long Range RWD specs and warranty

The Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD variant offers a cargo capacity of 2,138 litres and weighs 1,901 kg. It supports a maximum supercharging rate of 250 kW on a pay-per-use basis. The vehicle comes with a basic warranty of four years or 80,000 km, whichever is earlier, and the battery and drive unit are covered for eight years or up to 192,000 km, whichever comes first.

Standard RWD specs and warranty

The standard RWD version also provides a cargo space of 2,138 litres, with a slightly higher weight of 1,928 kg. It supports supercharging at a maximum rate of 175 kW, also on a pay-per-use basis. The basic warranty is the same at four years or 80,000 km, while the battery and drive unit are covered for eight years or 160,000 km, whichever occurs first.

Colour options and pricing

The Tesla Model Y is available in a total of four colour options. Stealth Grey is offered as the standard colour. Buyers can choose Pearl White Multi-Coat or Diamond Black at an additional cost of ₹95,000 each. Glacier Blue is priced at an extra ₹1,25,000, while Quicksilver and Ultra Red are the most premium options, available at an additional ₹1,85,000 each.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated Tesla's first showroom called 'Experience Centre' at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) here, saying this is not just an inauguration of an Experience Centre but a statement that Tesla has arrived in the city of Mumbai which is the entrepreneurial capital of India -- not just financial, commercial and entertainment capital. The second outlet is expected to be launched in New Delhi.
