Vijay to meet Governor today, CM oath likely tomorrow: Sengottaiyan joins key talks

Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s post-election political scenario has taken a dramatic turn after Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections with 108 seats in the 234-member House.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar confirms to ANI that TVK Chief Vijay is meeting with him today. He wrote a letter to him. Despite this strong debut, the party remains short of the 118-seat majority required to form the government on its own.
According to sources, Vijay is likely to meet the Tamil Nadu Governor today to formally stake a claim to form the government. The development comes amid rapid alliance negotiations as TVK attempts to secure additional support to cross the majority mark.
Congress, which won five seats in the election, has reportedly decided to extend support to TVK to help form the government. However, the arrangement is still evolving, and discussions are ongoing regarding the nature of support and possible conditions attached to it.
Reports suggest that Vijay could take oath as Chief Minister as early as tomorrow in Chennai if the numbers are finalised. Preparations for a potential swearing-in ceremony are said to be underway, although official confirmation is still awaited.
The election has resulted in a fractured mandate, with no single alliance securing a clear majority. This has placed TVK at the centre of post-poll negotiations, with smaller parties and independents also being approached to ensure stable governance.
Sources indicate that talks are moving quickly as the political situation remains fluid. The coming hours are expected to be crucial in determining whether Vijay can successfully form the government or whether further coalition arrangements will be required to reach the majority threshold.
The developments mark a significant shift in Tamil Nadu politics, with TVK emerging as a major new force and disrupting the traditional political balance in the state.
