Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced a hike in the procurement price of state-owned Aavin milk from Rs 38 to Rs 41 per litre on Wednesday.

Despite the state facing financial constraints, the government decided to enhance the procurement rate to ensure a fair remunerative price for milk producers, prioritising their well-being and livelihood, he said.

Speaking under Rule 110 in the Assembly, the chief minister stated that the purchase price for milk collected through Aavin’s primary milk cooperative societies would be raised from Rs 38 to Rs 41, which includes a state government incentive of Rs 3 per litre. He added that the decision would benefit more than 3.16 lakh milk producers.

Vijay noted that the gesture will result in an additional expenditure of Rs 30 crore per month for the state government, while criticising the previous DMK administration for failing to take steps to increase the procurement price.
