Supreme Court clears hurdle for Shah Rukh Khan's dream renovation of Mannat

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition challenging the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance granted for the renovation of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan's Mumbai residence, Mannat, providing relief to the actor.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana declined to interfere with a September 16, 2025 order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had upheld the CRZ clearance for the construction of two additional floors at the sea-facing bungalow in Bandra.
Questioning the petitioner's motive, the bench observed that there was little reason for others to intervene in the matter when the construction was being carried out on a private residential property.
"They are living there. If in a residential house they want to have (additional floors)... it's their choice. The law is broadly followed. Why should a neighbour or anybody else intervene?" the bench remarked during the hearing.
Senior advocate Shoeb Alam, appearing for petitioner Santosh Daundkar, argued that the case should not be viewed differently merely because it involved a high-profile film star. He submitted that Daundkar is a respected activist who had earlier exposed the Adarsh housing scam.
The petition challenged the clearance granted by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), alleging that the authority had committed errors while approving the renovation plans for Mannat.
However, the National Green Tribunal had earlier dismissed the plea, holding that the petitioner had failed to establish any procedural irregularity or legal infirmity in the approval granted by the MCZMA.
Upholding the tribunal's findings, the Supreme Court refused to entertain the challenge, effectively clearing the way for the renovation work, including the addition of two floors, to proceed.
