Supreme Court allows Abhishek Banerjee to travel abroad for eye treatment

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday allowed Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee to travel abroad for three weeks for eye treatment.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana passed the order while hearing the Diamond Harbour MP's plea challenging a Calcutta High Court order that had denied him permission to travel abroad for medical treatment.

The Calcutta High Court had on August 5 rejected Banerjee's plea, noting that he had been unwilling to appear before a medical board at the state-run SSKM Hospital for an assessment of his medical condition.

The High Court had observed that if Banerjee had appeared before the medical board, the court could have considered the medical experts' opinion to determine whether he required treatment abroad.

The Supreme Court had on August 3 directed the High Court to hear Banerjee's plea seeking permission to travel abroad within a week.

Banerjee, the TMC's Diamond Harbour MP, had approached the Supreme Court challenging the High Court's decision and seeking permission to travel abroad for his eye treatment.

The apex court's order on Monday now allows him to travel abroad for a period of three weeks for the treatment.
