Mumbai: At least six people lost their lives, and one person was injured after a three-storey chawl (multi-story housing) collapsed in the Mankhurd area on Sunday night amid heavy rainfall, officials said.

Rescue teams continued searching through the debris amid fears that more people could still be trapped.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the victims included four women and two men. Five victims — four women and one man — were "brought dead" to the civic-run Shatabdi Hospital, while another man was declared dead at Rajawadi Hospital.

A man injured in the collapse is currently undergoing treatment at the BMC-run Rajawadi Hospital.

The incident took place around 8.30 pm at Chawl No. 5 in Janta Nagar, behind Hanuman Mandir, in Mankhurd.

Preliminary information suggests that two to three tenements forming part of the three-storey chawl gave way, triggering a large-scale rescue operation involving personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, the BMC ward office and the 108 ambulance service.

Officials said search and rescue operations were continuing to determine whether additional occupants remained trapped beneath the rubble.

Local BJP corporator Navnath Ban said "one more person is still feared trapped under the debris." He added that continuous heavy rainfall was making rescue efforts more challenging.
