The ongoing heatwave sweeping across India has forced several state governments and education departments to announce summer vacations, revise school timings, and temporarily shut educational institutions to protect students from extreme temperatures.

With mercury levels crossing dangerous limits in multiple regions, schools affiliated with CBSE, ICSE, state boards, government institutions, and private schools are witnessing major schedule changes.

Authorities say the decision has been taken keeping student health and safety in mind amid increasing risks of dehydration, heatstroke, and exhaustion.

In Delhi-NCR, schools have been closed from May 11 to July 1, 2026, giving students a long 51-day summer break due to intense heatwave conditions.

Uttar Pradesh schools began summer vacations from May 20 and will remain closed till June 15, while several schools in Noida and Ghaziabad had earlier shifted to morning classes before closure.

Rajasthan has also announced extended holidays from May 17 to June 20 amid extreme temperatures.

Bihar schools will remain shut from June 1 to June 20, while Haryana schools are set to observe vacations from June 1 to June 30.

In South India, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have announced one of the longest summer breaks this year, with schools remaining closed from April 24 to June 11.

Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Maharashtra are currently following annual summer vacation schedules, although authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely.

Eastern and central states, including Odisha, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal have either revised school timings or announced temporary closures in several districts due to severe heat and humidity.

Meanwhile, hill and northeastern states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland are continuing with regional academic calendars, though some lower-altitude districts are considering timing changes due to rising temperatures.

Punjab and Jammu regions are also likely to witness revised schedules or early summer breaks if heatwave conditions continue to worsen.

Officials across states have indicated that vacations may be extended further if temperatures remain dangerously high in the coming weeks.
