New Delhi:The Ministry of Culture, Government of India has written to the states to observe June 25, which marks the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, as 'Constitution Assassination Day' across the country. The letter to the Chief Secretaries of the states has directed them to organise year-long programmes. The Governor or Chief Minister should be involved in the programme.

The first anniversary will be celebrated till June 25 next year under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture. Along with this, the states and union territories should conduct programmes.

A nodal officer should be appointed to coordinate with the Ministry of Culture for the smooth running of events.

The program schedule is divided into two parts. One on June 25 and the second until June 25, 2026. The procession carrying six torches representing the spirit of democracy will start from Delhi on June 25. States have to organise a welcome function. When the torch relay returns to Delhi on March 21, 2026, the Prime Minister will attend the program at Kartavya Path.

Exhibitions should be held in villages to make them aware of the Emergency period that existed. Short films released by the government should be screened in educational institutions and workshops on the subject should be held. It is also suggested that these matters should be disseminated through the media as well.

The Sengol (golden scepter) should be emphasized

The Ministry of Culture also asked the state Chief Secretaries to give importance to the Sengol- the golden scepter installed in the new Parliament. A replica of the scepter is to be kept in a visible manner at the venue where the program will be held on June 25.

Placards should be prepared to praise democracy and say ' Salute to the Sengol or scepter'. The letter states that it symbolizes governance according to Dharma.
