The court has decided to announce the quantum of punishment on Monday said Anirban Das, the additional district and sessions judge. Roy, who was sent to judicial custody, denied the charges, claiming he was being framed and that the real culprits were still at large.
The verdict brings a sense of relief to the victim's family, who have been relentlessly pursuing justice for their daughter following the shocking incident that captured national attention.
The judgement was pronounced nearly two months after the in-camera trial commenced in November last year and 162 days after the heinous crime was committed on August 9, 2024.
Roy was found guilty under Sections 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita which governs rape, and Sections 66 and 103 (1) of the Act, which deals with punishments for death and murder.
Section 103 (1) of BNS entails a maximum punishment of death or life imprisonment.
The case involves the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor, whose lifeless body was discovered on August 9, 2024, in the seminar room of the hospital. The crime sent shockwaves across the community, triggering protests and calls for swift justice. Following the incident, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, was arrested in connection with the murder.
In a separate development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a chargesheet in November last year regarding financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The chargesheet named several individuals, including Sandip Ghosh, Dr. Ashish Kumar Pandey, Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali Khan, for their involvement in financial misconduct. This investigation stemmed from an order by the Calcutta High Court.
Alongside the corruption case, Sandip Ghosh has also been questioned in connection with the rape and murder. The CBI conducted polygraph tests on him as part of the ongoing probe.
However, due to delays in filing the chargesheet, some accused, including Abhijit Mondal and Sandip Ghosh, were granted bail. The family's demand for justice remains steadfast as they await the verdict in this highly sensitive and high-profile case.
