My sister did in 5 minutes what I couldn’t in 20 years: Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, on Thursday made a candid and humorous remark about his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, saying she achieved in five minutes what he could not in 20 years.
Speaking during a debate in Parliament on Friday, he said he felt proud after watching her recent speech, adding that she managed to make the Home Minister Amit Shah smile — a comment that triggered laughter among members. He said: “Neither I nor PM Modi have wives, so we don’t get feedback from that perspective. But I have my mother & sister. Yesterday my sister did something in 5 years which I couldn’t do in 20 years — to make Amit Shah smile ”
Priyanka Gandhi’s speech draws attention
Priyanka Gandhi had earlier delivered a sharp intervention in the House while responding to the government’s defence of three bills under discussion.
In her speech on Thursday, she took a pointed swipe using a reference to Chanakya, suggesting that even the ancient strategist would have been surprised by the level of political manoeuvring. Her remarks, directed at the Home Minister, were delivered in a tone that drew both attention and a smile from him.
During her speech, Priyanka Gandhi also raised concerns about the handling of the women’s reservation measure, stating that it had been strategically linked with delimitation.
She suggested that the move reflected a calculated approach to ensure the bill’s passage, adding a political edge to the ongoing debate in the House.
Rahul Gandhi praises ‘nari shakti’
Joining the discussion, Rahul Gandhi highlighted the role of women in shaping society and individual lives. He described women as a central force in the country’s collective thinking and development.
He spoke about how individuals are influenced by women in their families, including mothers and sisters, and acknowledged their contribution to personal growth and values.
Adding a personal note to his speech, Rahul Gandhi shared a childhood memory about being afraid of darkness and how his grandmother helped him overcome that fear. He said the experience taught him important life lessons, reinforcing his point about the influence of women in shaping one’s character.
The exchange brought a moment of humour to an otherwise serious parliamentary debate, with Rahul Gandhi’s remarks about his sister and a comparison involving the Prime Minister drawing laughter across party lines.
The interaction highlighted both the political sharpness and lighter side of proceedings in the Lok Sabha during discussions on key legislative issues.
