Punjab floods: 30 dead, 3.5 lakh affected; Schools to stay shut till Sept 7

Amritsar: The Punjab government has decided to extend the closure of all educational institutions till 7 September 2025 because of the worsening flood situation across the state.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains.

"As directed by Hon'ble CM Punjab Shree Bhagwant Singh Mann Ji, in view of the flood situation, all govt/aided/recognised & private schools, colleges, universities & Polytechnics across Punjab will remain closed till 7th Sept 2025.

"Everyone is requested to strictly follow the local administration's guidelines," said Bains on X.

Before this latest decision, the state government had already declared holidays in all schools and colleges up to 3 September.

What has caused the floods?

Punjab is battling severe floods triggered by heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, which swelled the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers along with seasonal rivulets. Local rainfall in Punjab has further added to the crisis.

How severe is the impact?

The floods have taken a heavy toll across the state. So far, 30 people have lost their lives, and more than 3.50 lakh people have been affected by the deluge.
