Pune Metro Phase 2 approved: Union Cabinet sanctions two new corridors

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given approval for the next phase of Pune’s Metro Rail expansion, sanctioning two major new corridors: Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug) under Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. This decision follows previous approvals for Line 2A (Vanaz–Chandani Chowk) and Line 2B (Ramwadi–Wagholi/Vitthalwadi), marking a significant step in the city’s efforts to strengthen public transportation infrastructure.
Details of the Expansion
The newly approved corridors will span a combined total of 31.636 kilometres with 28 elevated stations, covering IT hubs, commercial zones, educational institutions, and major residential areas across East, South, and West Pune. The entire project is slated for completion within five years at an estimated cost of ₹9,857.85 crore, with funding jointly provided by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and various bilateral and multilateral agencies.
These corridors form part of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and will integrate seamlessly with existing metro lines and major transport hubs, including Kharadi Bypass, Nal Stop, Swargate, and Hadapsar Railway Station. Furthermore, connectivity with key city routes and future transport corridors is expected to ensure smooth multimodal travel for residents across metro, rail, and bus networks.
