New Delhi: The National Archives of India (NAI) has acquired a valuable collection of private papers belonging to former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, including his original passport, Aadhaar card, PAN card, personal correspondences, and lectures delivered across various institutions.

The extensive collection also features several original photographs and tour reports, offering a deeper insight into the life and work of one of India’s most revered scientists and statesmen. Known as the “Missile Man of India,” Kalam served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007 and played a critical role in advancing the country’s defence and space programmes.

Donation by family members

The collection was formally handed over to the NAI by Kalam’s niece, APJM Nazema Maraikayar, and grand-nephew, APJMJ Sheik Saleem. Arun Singhal, Director General of the NAI, signed an agreement with Maraikayar during a ceremony to mark the acquisition.

A life of service and simplicity

Born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, into a modest family, Dr Kalam rose to national prominence through his work in physics and aerospace engineering. His contributions to India’s missile development and leadership during the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998 were instrumental in strengthening the country’s strategic capabilities.

Kalam’s tenure at organisations like DRDO and ISRO earned him numerous accolades, including the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

Inspiration beyond science

Beyond his scientific and administrative achievements, Dr Kalam was known for his deep connection with India’s youth. He authored several books, including Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, and India 2020, which continue to inspire readers to dream and contribute to national development.

Affectionately called the "People’s President" for his accessible and humble demeanour, Kalam dedicated his post-presidential years to mentoring students and advocating for education.

Enduring legacy

Dr Kalam passed away in July 2015 while doing what he loved—interacting with young minds. His legacy, characterised by simplicity, perseverance, and visionary leadership, remains deeply embedded in India’s collective memory.

Role of the National Archives

As the official custodian of non-current records of the Government of India, the NAI preserves documents for administrative and research use under the Public Records Act, 1993. In addition to public records, the NAI maintains a growing collection of private papers from eminent Indians who have significantly contributed to the nation’s history and development.
