'Those who harm our youth will not be spared': PM Modi announces fast-track courts

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced the setting up of fast-track courts to ensure swift trials and stringent punishment for those involved in examination paper leak cases, asserting that nothing is more important than the welfare and future of India's youth. 

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the government has directed all concerned authorities to take the necessary steps to implement the decision and warned that those who jeopardise students' futures 'will not be spared.'

'Nothing is more important than the welfare and future of our youth! We have decided to set up fast-track courts to ensure swift and stringent punishment for those involved in paper leaks. Have directed the concerned authorities and officials to take all necessary steps in this regard. This continues our series of steps for safeguarding the interests of students. Those who try to harm the future of our youth will not be spared,' Modi said.

The announcement comes amid intensifying protests over the alleged NEET paper leak and examination irregularities, with demonstrations taking place in Delhi and several other cities.

Protesters have demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of students who allegedly died by suicide following the controversy, withdrawal of FIRs against peaceful protesters, and assurances that no fresh cases would be filed against demonstrators.

Activist Sourav Das, one of the protest organisers, described Pradhan's resignation as 'non-negotiable' and said the agitation would continue until the demand was met.

Meanwhile, Union Health Minister JP Nadda appealed against politicising the paper leak issue, saying it is a serious matter that requires comprehensive discussion and systemic solutions.

Das also said he had spoken with activist Sonam Wangchuk, who urged protesters to maintain peace and conduct the agitation responsibly.

He alleged that anti-social elements often infiltrate protests to derail peaceful demonstrations.

According to Delhi Police, over 118 police personnel, including several senior officers and women personnel, were injured during clashes linked to the protests. Around 60 protesters also sustained injuries.
