One killed, 30 injured as pickup carrying Ganga-bound devotees overturns in UP’s Kaushambi

Kaushambi (UP): One person was killed, and around 30 others were injured after a speeding pickup truck carrying devotees to the Ganga overturned in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi district on Monday, officials said.

The accident took place on the Malaka Highway under the Kokhraj police station area when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn, they said.

One person died at the spot, while nearly 30 devotees sustained injuries. Several of the injured are reportedly in critical condition and are undergoing treatment at a medical college.

After receiving information about the accident, Kokhraj Station House Officer Santosh Sharma and his team reached the spot and launched rescue operations.

The police evacuated the injured and rushed them to the hospital. Sharma also used his official government vehicle to transport some of the injured for immediate medical attention.

District Magistrate Amit Kumar Pal told reporters, "Thirty people have been injured in this incident. As soon as we received the information, ambulances were dispatched, and the injured were immediately transported to the hospital."

The injured devotees were admitted to the medical college, where doctors are treating them. Officials said the condition of several injured persons remains serious.

Local residents and relatives of the victims praised the prompt response of the Kokhraj police, particularly Sharma, for personally helping transport the injured to the hospital.

Police teams also carried out rescue and relief operations at the accident site and ensured that the injured were shifted for treatment without delay.

The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination, while further legal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the accident.
