‘One Nation, One Time’: Indian Standard Time mandatory from March 2027

New Delhi: The Central Government has issued a notification to implement the ‘One Nation, One Time’ initiative. The notification mandates the use of Indian Standard Time (IST) for all legal, commercial, digital and administrative operations across the country.

Starting March 2027, every institution in India will be required to align with Indian Standard Time. To this effect, the government has notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026.

The objective is to establish a secure and uniform national timekeeping system, eliminating reliance on foreign time sources such as GPS for critical applications. According to government assessments, utilising a unified time reference across legal documents, commercial transactions, digital systems and administrative processes will help eradicate time discrepancies and operational confusion.

At present, numerous digital infrastructure systems, telecom operators and internet service providers rely on foreign time providers, including GPS. The new framework aims to mitigate this dependency to enhance the security of vital infrastructure and digital networks.

Official sources indicated that implementing a unified Indian Standard Time will strengthen digital transaction security, reduce the risk of cybercrime and ensure precise, coordinated scheduling across transport, telecommunications and other communication networks.
