New Delhi: Nitin Nabin formally took charge as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s national president on Tuesday. The party headquarters in the national capital wore a festive look as leaders and workers gathered to mark the occasion.

Earlier in the day, the 45-year-old minister offered prayers at the Hanuman Temple in CP, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and Jhandewalan Temple before assuming his new role.

Nabin became the 12th president of the BJP, which was founded in 1980, the same year he was born.

The low-profile and unassuming Nabin had resigned as the minister for law and justice, urban development and housing in the Bihar government after he was appointed working president of the BJP on December 14.

Senior leaders attend the ceremony

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with senior leaders of the party.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai arrived at the BJP headquarters to take part in the event.

Union Minister and outgoing BJP national president JP Nadda also reached the party headquarters. Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari was also present. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also arrived to participate in the event.

EAM S Jaishankar and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also attended the program.

Z-category VIP security granted

Nitin Nabin has recently been granted top-category VIP security cover by the Centre, officials said on Tuesday.

The VIP security wing of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been assigned to provide Z-category security for Nabin.

A few weeks ago, the Union Home Ministry directed the CRPF to take charge of his security following his announcement as the new BJP party leader, officials said.

Armed CRPF commandos will accompany him during his travels across the country, they added.

Party welcomes young leadership

BJP MP Manan Kumar Mishra welcomed Nabin’s appointment as national president and said the party intends to create opportunities for younger leaders. He noted that Nabin’s experience would help strengthen the organisation and improve its performance.

"The party has taken a resolve to give space to young leadership. He is young and also quite social. He has a lot of experience. Our party is the largest party in the world. Under his leadership, even better work will be done," Manan told reporters on Monday.

Election process and nominations

The BJP's National President Election process kicked off after 30 out of 36 State Presidents were elected, exceeding the required 50 percent threshold. The election schedule was announced on January 16, 2026, along with the electoral roll.
