Nitin Gadkari appeals for peace amid Nagpur violence, urges public to ignore rumours

Nagpur: Amid escalating tensions in Nagpur over allegations of religious desecration, Union Minister and local MP Nitin Gadkari has urged citizens to remain calm and not fall for rumours.

Violence erupted in parts of the city on Monday after rumours spread that a holy book had been burnt during an agitation by a right-wing outfit demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. Protesters clashed with the police in the Mahal and Chitnis Park areas, leading to incidents of stone pelting and vandalism. Several vehicles were torched, and at least four people, including police personnel, sustained injuries.

"Due to certain rumours, a situation of religious tension has arisen in Nagpur. The city's history is known for maintaining peace in such matters. I urge all my brothers not to believe in any kind of rumours and to maintain peace. Do not come out onto the streets. Cooperate with the law and order system," Gadkari said in a statement.

He assured the public that the government is closely monitoring the situation and that action will be taken against those responsible for any unlawful activities. "The Chief Minister has been informed, and I request everyone to trust the authorities and maintain peace. Let us preserve Nagpur’s tradition of harmony and ensure a positive atmosphere in the city," he added.

Gadkari’s statement comes as police struggle to contain unrest in parts of the city following violent clashes and reports of vandalism. Authorities have urged citizens to refrain from spreading misinformation and to cooperate in restoring order.
