Navi Mumbai International Airport set for September 30 inauguration

After several missed deadlines, the much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) now looks set to open on September 30, with strong indications that the inauguration will finally take place as planned.
According to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the runway will be ready for operations ahead of the event. In recent months, AAI has been repeatedly extending NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) to keep the runway closed. However, the latest notification has fixed September 20 as the final day of closure, a sign that the project is nearing completion.
According to TOI, if the inauguration had been pushed further, the NOTAM would have also been extended beyond September 30. Preparations are also reportedly underway to host the Prime Minister at the site for the opening ceremony.
Domestic flights are expected to begin from the new airport by late October or early November, starting with a limited number of services.
Earlier deadlines had been set for May, then August, and later September 3. This latest revision, however, has shortened the closure period, underlining the readiness of the project being developed by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL).
The opening of Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to bring major relief to Mumbai’s overburdened Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), which is currently operating at near full capacity.
For Navi Mumbai residents, the new airport will provide a convenient alternative, cutting travel time significantly compared to travelling to CSMIA in Andheri, for Pune travellers too the new hub will create better connectivity options, with more flight choices and reduced congestion at Mumbai airport.
For Mumbai at large, NMIA will ease crowding, shorten check-in and security queues, and help airlines add new domestic and international routes in the future.
With Mumbai set to become a twin-airport city, Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to play a crucial role in supporting India’s fast-growing aviation market and making air travel smoother for millions of passengers across western India.
