NASA astronaut shares stunning images of 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela from space

Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: NASA astronaut Donald Pettit recently shared remarkable images of the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela, captured from the International Space Station (ISS). The stunning photos show the grandeur of the event, with the Ganges River pilgrimage shining brightly at night.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Pettit wrote: "2025 Maha Kumbh Mela Ganges River pilgrimage from the ISS at night. The largest human gathering in the world is well lit."
The images taken from space offer a unique perspective of the massive scale of the festival, which has drawn millions of devotees from around the world. The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj has already seen over 110 million participants in the first two weeks, making it one of the largest spiritual gatherings globally. The festival, held once every 12 years, is expected to continue drawing crowds until its conclusion on 26 February 2025.
Millions of pilgrims unite for sacred rituals
The Maha Kumbh Mela is centred around a sacred dip at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the now-extinct Saraswati river. Pilgrims believe this ritual bath washes away sins and paves the way to moksha (liberation). The event occurs during a rare celestial alignment that enhances its spiritual significance.
Despite cold weather, millions of devotees have flocked to Prayagraj to take part in this religious ritual, which remains a vibrant symbol of collective faith, transcending borders of language, lifestyle, and tradition.
Preparations for record crowds continue
The festival’s largest turnout is expected during Mauni Amavasya on 29 January 2025, with authorities anticipating up to 45 crore (450 million) visitors. This significant event will make history, further elevating the importance of the Maha Kumbh Mela as a cultural and spiritual milestone for India.
As the festival progresses, the sight of millions gathering for a shared spiritual purpose continues to inspire awe, highlighting the unity and devotion that characterise this iconic gathering.
