12-year-old pulled from school, kept in chains: Nagpur officials probe months-long abuse

Authorities in Nagpur rescued a 12-year-old boy who had allegedly been tied up with ropes and chains for months while his parents left for work, officials said. The child was found on Friday, 2 January, after a team from the Maharashtra Women and Child Development Department and local police responded to a tip-off and discovered him still bound inside the family’s home.

Officials said the boy appeared to have suffered prolonged physical and psychological abuse. A medical examination later revealed injuries on his hands and legs that were two to three months old, consistent with marks caused by chains and tightly wound ropes.

Parents’ explanation and daily routine

According to authorities, the parents admitted to restraining the child every morning around 9 a.m. before leaving for their jobs. They reportedly claimed the measure was meant to prevent him from stealing mobile phones and other belongings in the neighbourhood. Investigators said the parents had also pulled the boy out of school, effectively cutting him off from formal education for an extended period.

Officials familiar with the case told The Times of India that the child was found standing on a bucket when the team arrived, still secured with chains. They said the pattern of injuries indicated the abuse had been ongoing for months and had likely contributed to significant mental distress.

Police sources said they had earlier received complaints about the boy’s behaviour, including allegations of theft, but the repeated physical restraint appeared to have intensified his behavioural issues rather than addressing them.

Investigation under way

The matter has been referred to the local Child Welfare Committee, which will determine the boy’s immediate care and rehabilitation. Police are continuing their investigation under provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.
