As India welcomed 2026, Mumbai’s iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) erupted in a symphony of train horns, continuing a unique New Year’s tradition. Videos circulating widely on social media show the Victorian-era station packed with passengers, all witnessing the synchronised celebration.

The spectacle began just before midnight, with the station clock showing 11:59 pm. As the clock struck 12, train horns blared across the platforms, filling the historic station with a resonant, jubilant sound. Commuters and railway staff joined in the celebrations, recording the moment on their phones and applauding as the city rang in the new year.

Central Railway shared a video of the event on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, extending warm New Year greetings and wishing passengers safe and memorable journeys throughout 2026. “Central Railway celebrates New Year at CSMT with customary horns at 00.00 of 1 January 2026. Happy New Year and Safe Journey Ahead to all,” the post read.

Social media users quickly reacted to the video, praising Indian Railways for the “creative initiative.” One user wrote, “Proud to see Indian Railways set the tone for a resilient and connected 2026,” while another added, “It is a loud, chaotic, and perfect way to ring in the year. That energy is exactly what makes the city feel alive.”

Local trains play an essential role in Mumbai life, ferrying millions of commuters daily. Beyond their everyday function, the midnight horn spectacle highlighted the communal spirit of the city, bringing people together for a shared, festive moment. Many attendees were seen planning to continue celebrations at the Gateway of India or Marine Drive before taking the first local train home on New Year’s morning.

The annual tradition at CSMT remains a distinctive way for the city to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new, blending the rhythm of Mumbai’s railways with the energy and optimism of its residents.
