Mumbai fire: 40 rescued after blaze hits Andheri West high-rise

Mumbai: Emergency crews rescued approximately 40 residents after a blaze broke out Thursday morning in a 23-story residential tower in Mumbai’s Andheri West neighbourhood, authorities said.

The fire at Sorrento Tower, located on Veera Desai Road near the Country Club, was reported around 10:00 a.m. No injuries were reported in the incident.

According to a municipal official, firefighters evacuated between 30 and 40 individuals who had gathered in the 16th-floor refuge area, guiding them to safety via the building's internal staircase. In a separate operation, rescue teams used breathing apparatus to reach three people, including one woman, who were trapped in a flat on the 15th floor.

Investigators found that the fire was concentrated within the building's electrical shaft, impacting wiring and infrastructure between the 10th and 21st floors. The flames also destroyed routers, shoe racks, and various wooden furniture pieces stored near the service duct on several levels.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade dispatched at least four fire engines and additional specialised equipment to the scene. The blaze was officially declared extinguished at 11:37 a.m. while the specific cause of the fire remains under investigation.
