New Secretariat near Marina Beach? Stalin opposes Vijay government’s plan

Chennai: DMK president MK Stalin on Monday opposed the TVK government's proposal to construct a new Secretariat-Assembly complex at Foreshore Estate near Marina Beach in Chennai.

The former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said there was no need for a new Secretariat in a congested area if the project would affect the livelihoods and neighbourhood of fishermen living there.

“A Secretariat is for the Chief Minister to work, not to gaze at the sea,” Stalin said sarcastically while criticising the proposal.

In a statement, Stalin extended the DMK's support to fishermen protesting against the proposed project in the area.

He also criticised the TVK government for not withdrawing the Government Order related to the construction despite opposition from parties supporting the government.

“We will crush the TVK regime's arrogance,” Stalin said.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), which supports the government from outside, has also protested against the proposed project near the beach.

The CPI(M) has raised concerns over the potential impact on the livelihoods of fishermen and the environmental vulnerability of the coastal area.
