Imphal: Fresh tensions have gripped Manipur after a suspected rocket attack killed two children and left their mother injured, triggering protests and renewed unrest in the state.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday in Bishnupur district, one of the areas that has repeatedly witnessed violence since ethnic clashes broke out in 2023.

According to officials, the explosive projectile struck a residential area, raising fears over the use of more sophisticated weapons in the conflict.

In response, the Manipur government imposed an immediate curfew in Bishnupur to prevent further escalation.

Authorities also suspended mobile internet services for three days across five districts, Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur, citing the need to curb misinformation and maintain public order.

The attack has sparked fresh protests in parts of the Imphal valley, with angry residents taking to the streets and demanding stronger security measures. Security forces have since been deployed in sensitive areas to control the situation and prevent clashes.

Officials said investigations are underway to determine the origin and nature of the weapon used. The use of a suspected rocket or similar explosive marks a worrying escalation in the ongoing conflict, which has already claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands over the past year.

The state remains on edge, with authorities closely monitoring the situation amid fears of further retaliatory violence.
