Manipur violence: NPP’s 7 MLAs withdraw support from BJP Govt

Imphal: The National People’s Party (NPP) has officially withdrawn its support from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Manipur, led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The decision comes amid accusations that the state government has failed to address the ongoing crisis that has gripped Manipur.
In a letter sent to BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda on Sunday, NPP’s national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed grave concerns over the deteriorating law and order in the state. He highlighted the worsening situation, stating it had caused immense suffering and loss of innocent lives.
“The current leadership in Manipur has been unable to bring the crisis under control or restore normalcy. In light of this, the National People’s Party has decided to end its support for the Biren Singh government immediately,” Sangma stated.
Ethnic tensions and displacement
Manipur has been grappling with violent clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities since 2023. These conflicts have claimed around 250 lives and displaced approximately 60,000 people.
The state is now divided into two ethnic regions—the Meitei-dominated valley and the Kuki-controlled hills—separated by no-man’s land guarded by federal forces.
On Saturday, an indefinite curfew was imposed, and internet and mobile services were suspended. This followed attempts by protestors to storm the residences of several lawmakers, including Chief Minister Biren Singh.
NPP's role in Manipur's politics
The NPP holds seven MLA seats in Manipur, representing constituencies such as Kshetrigao, Wangoi, Oinam, Moirang, Kakching, Tadubi, and Tamenglong.
The MLAs include Sheikh Noorul Hassan (Kshetrigao AC), Khuraijam Loken Singh (Wangoi AC), Irengbam Nalini Devi (Oinam AC), Thongam Shanti Singh (Moirang AC), Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh (Kakching AC), N. Kayisii (Tadubi AC), and Janghemlung Panmei (Tamenglong AC).
