Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has approached the Calcutta High Court challenging the election result of the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency.

In a surprise move, she arrived at the High Court on Tuesday afternoon and filed an affidavit contesting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s victory from the seat.

This is the second time Banerjee has approached the High Court since the TMC suffered a major setback in the Assembly elections.

Earlier, on May 14, Banerjee had appeared before the High Court in connection with a case related to post-poll violence.

During that visit, she faced protests from a section of lawyers. As she left the courtroom, slogans of ‘thief’ were reportedly raised against her. Nearly a month later, on June 16, she returned to the High Court.

Her sudden appearance at the court on Tuesday sparked curiosity among those present. Later, one of Banerjee’s lawyers confirmed that she had filed an election petition concerning the Bhabanipur constituency.

It is understood that the affidavit submitted by her relates to the same matter. TMC leaders Kunal Ghosh and Dola Sen accompanied her to court.

After completing the necessary legal formalities, Banerjee left the High Court premises.

In the 2026 Assembly elections, Banerjee was defeated by Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur by a margin of more than 15,000 votes.

She has now formally challenged that result in court. Notably, Adhikari had also defeated Banerjee in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly elections. Banerjee had challenged that result as well by filing an election petition, and the Nandigram case is still pending before the court.

Apart from Banerjee, TMC candidate Tapas Chatterjee from the Rajarhat-New Town constituency has also approached the court challenging the election outcome in his seat.

It may be recalled that Banerjee had been raising objections since the counting day on May 4.

Vote counting for Bhabanipur was conducted at South Kolkata’s Sakhawat Memorial School.

Before several rounds of counting were completed, Banerjee left the counting centre and alleged that the process was being conducted in a ‘one-sided’ manner.

She also claimed that she had been pushed and assaulted, and accused her opponents of ‘vote rigging.’
