Maharashtra: In a major road safety initiative, the Maharashtra Police helmet rule has been tightened, making helmet use mandatory for all police personnel riding two-wheelers across the state.

The directive, issued by the Director General of Police (DGP), has been circulated to all commissionerates and district police units, reinforcing compliance with traffic safety rules in Maharashtra.

Police told to lead by example on road safety

The decision follows a high-level meeting in Nagpur, where the DGP emphasised that law enforcement officers must set an example in adhering to road safety norms and helmet laws in India.

He stated that failure by police personnel to follow traffic rules undermines efforts to ensure public compliance. Authorities have warned that strict disciplinary action for helmet violations will be taken against offenders.

Two-wheeler accidents a major concern in Maharashtra

According to a study by the Maharashtra Police, two-wheeler riders account for 35–40 per cent of road accident deaths and serious injuries in the state over the past decade.

Road safety experts have consistently highlighted that proper helmet use significantly reduces fatal head injuries, yet compliance remains uneven.

While helmet usage exceeds 80 per cent in urban centres such as Mumbai and Nagpur, it drops below 20 per cent in several districts, highlighting gaps in helmet compliance in Maharashtra.

Penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act and the service record impact

Under the new Maharashtra Police helmet mandate, any personnel found riding without a helmet while on duty will face penalties under Section 194(D) of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Additionally, if violations are captured on social media, they will be treated as serious misconduct and indiscipline, with entries made in the officer’s service record—potentially affecting promotions and career progression.

Compliance reports and strict monitoring ordered

The DGP’s office has instructed all units to ensure immediate enforcement of the helmet rule for police personnel and submit compliance reports to headquarters at the earliest.

Officials say the move is a critical step towards strengthening road safety awareness in Maharashtra, with the expectation that improved compliance among police will encourage the general public to follow helmet rules more strictly.

Boost to road safety enforcement in Maharashtra

The mandatory helmet rule for Maharashtra Police is being seen as a key policy intervention to improve road discipline and reduce fatalities.

Authorities believe that visible adherence by police personnel will play a vital role in promoting helmet usage among two-wheeler riders and enhancing overall road safety standards across the state.
