Maharashtra civic polls results 2025: Mahayuti sweeps elections, Congress cries ‘EC helped BJP’

Mumbai: The ruling Mahayuti alliance registered a resounding victory in the Maharashtra local body election results 2025, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as the single largest party and tightening its grip on the state’s grassroots political machinery.
Results for all 288 Nagar Parishads and Nagar Panchayats have now been declared, with the BJP securing 129 seats, far ahead of its rivals.
The scale of the victory prompted the opposition — particularly the Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT) — to virtually concede defeat, while simultaneously alleging institutional bias. Both parties accused the State Election Commission of “facilitating” the Mahayuti’s win, claiming the contest was tilted heavily in favour of the ruling alliance.
State Congress president Harsh Vardhan Sapkal struck a sharp political note, warning BJP’s allies of what he described as an inevitable power shift within the alliance.
“The BJP’s success is a wake-up call for Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. The BJP will 100 per cent expel these two allies,” Sapkal said, signalling deeper fault lines within the ruling bloc.
Reacting to the verdict, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, widely regarded as the BJP’s chief election strategist, credited the outcome to public endorsement of the NDA’s governance model.
In a post on social media platform X, Shah said the results reflected the “people’s blessing on the vision of the NDA governments at the Centre and in Maharashtra, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for the welfare of all sections of society.”
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis echoed the sentiment, attributing the victory to a positive campaign strategy. “For the first time, I did not criticise any leader or party. I spoke only about my plans and campaigned 100 per cent positively.
The people approved it,” Fadnavis said, thanking voters for reaffirming their trust in the BJP’s leadership.
Polling for 264 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, held after a gap of nearly a decade, took place on December 2, while elections for around 20 additional civic bodies were conducted on December 20.
Vote counting began at 10 am on Sunday, concluding a prolonged and politically charged electoral process.
The opposition had entered the polls expecting a tighter contest, particularly amid agrarian distress, delayed payments under flagship welfare schemes for women, and farmer grievances over inadequate financial support. However, the results defied those expectations.
In a pointed statement, Sapkal sarcastically “congratulated” the Election Commission for what he alleged was its role in the Mahayuti’s sweeping win. Senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve, quoted by PTI, claimed that the ruling alliance prevailed due to “muscle and money power” deployed during the campaign.
With these results seen as a crucial prelude to the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the BJP’s decisive civic sweep has firmly shifted political momentum — leaving the MVA grappling with uncomfortable questions about its ground-level strength.
