Robots to fight fires at Mahakumbh 2025: A first in fire safety

Prayagraj: Mahakumbh 2025, the world’s largest spiritual gathering, is set to witness a technological leap in fire safety. For the first time, robotic fire tenders will be deployed to ensure the safety of millions of pilgrims and visitors, officials have announced.
Alongside these advanced robots, 200 specially trained fire commandos will be stationed at the event to handle emergencies effectively.
What are Robotic fire tenders?
Robotic fire tenders are compact machines, weighing between 20-25 kilograms, designed to reach areas inaccessible to human firefighters. These robots can climb stairs and extinguish fires with precision, making them ideal for crowded and high-risk zones.
“The inclusion of robotic fire tenders marks a technological leap in fire management. They can be easily carried and deployed in sensitive zones,” said Additional Director General (Fire Services) Padmaja Chauhan.
The Mahakumbh will also feature an articulating water tower, capable of spraying water from a height of 35 meters. Equipped with a high-tech camera, this tower will monitor fire-prone areas and ensure a rapid response.
To strengthen the human element, a Special Trained Rescue Group (STRG) has been established. Modeled after the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), this unit includes 200 personnel trained by the NDRF and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in Hyderabad. These commandos will focus on high-risk zones throughout the event.
Proactive fire safety planning
The focus isn’t just on firefighting but also on preventing incidents altogether. Daily fire audits will be conducted, and sanitation workers will monitor camps for the unsafe use of devices like immersion rods and blowers.
“Our priority is to prevent fire incidents entirely,” Chauhan explained. “By conducting regular inspections and addressing risks early, we aim to create a safe environment for all.”
Significant budget boost
Highlighting the increased emphasis on safety, the budget for fire services at Mahakumbh has seen a major hike—from Rs 6 crore during the last Kumbh to Rs 67 crore for 2025.
