Viral video row: KEM Hospital sends Sejal Pawar on 15-day forced leave from campus
Mumbai: KEM Hospital and Seth G.S. Medical College on Saturday placed MBBS student Sejal Pawar on 15-day forced leave following a controversy over a viral social media video in which she allegedly made objectionable remarks during a stand-up comedy performance.
Hospital authorities said Pawar has been handed over to her family after discussions with her parents, who visited the institution after the controversy surfaced. Sources added that the family is distressed by the incident and has expressed concern over her situation. Pawar has reportedly apologised to her family.
A preliminary internal inquiry confirmed that the person seen in the viral clip is Pawar. The administration stated that her remarks were found to be prima facie inappropriate and unacceptable.
As a result, the institute has barred her from entering the hospital premises, medical college campus, and hostel during the suspension period. She has also been prohibited from participating in academic or extracurricular activities.
Officials also expressed concern over her mental well-being and have advised counselling to help her cope with stress and public backlash.
The institute has proposed a five-member committee to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter. The panel is expected to include a retired senior professor, a senior journalist, and three faculty members, and will submit its report within seven days.
The controversy erupted after Pawar allegedly made remarks comparing the sizes of male cadavers’ genitalia during an interaction at a stand-up comedy show hosted by comedian Pranit More, triggering widespread criticism on social media.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Cyber has registered an FIR in connection with viral comedy videos featuring More, Himanshu Jangra, Pawar, and others. The FIR has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act for allegedly circulating obscene and objectionable content online. Authorities have also issued summons to those named in the case.
