Congress MP K C Venugopal reappointed PAC chairman for 2026–27

New Delhi: Congress MP K C Venugopal will continue to head one of Parliament’s most important financial oversight bodies, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), for the 2026–27 term according to PTI reports.
What the PAC does in parliament
The Public Accounts Committee is a key standing committee of Parliament responsible for examining government expenditure and ensuring financial accountability.
It primarily scrutinises reports submitted by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, focusing on whether public money has been spent efficiently and in accordance with approved budgets.
The committee consists of 22 members in total, including 15 from the Lok Sabha and 7 from the Rajya Sabha.
Its role is strictly financial oversight, and it is considered one of the most influential parliamentary panels due to its authority in reviewing government spending.
As chairperson, K C Venugopal leads the committee’s examination of audit reports related to government revenue and expenditure. He oversees discussions, hearings, and findings that assess wasteful spending, procedural lapses, and financial irregularities across ministries.
Why the PAC is important
The PAC plays a critical role in strengthening transparency in governance by holding the executive accountable for public funds. Its recommendations often influence policy corrections and administrative reforms in government departments.
Venugopal had earlier taken charge of the committee, succeeding Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. His reappointment for 2026–27 ensures continuity in the committee’s functioning and ongoing reviews of CAG reports.
